Kevin Hart was already in full comedian mode when he took over hosting duties at the 2025 BET Awards on June 9, but nobody seemed ready for what came next. In the middle of the celebration, Hart traded his usual hosting energy for his alter ego, Chocolate Droppa, and suddenly the night had a whole different flavour.
Wearing a dark grey hoodie and durag, Hart stepped into the cipher alongside DJ Kid Capri. The setup alone was enough to get the room buzzing. Then the beat dropped, and Hart launched into a playful freestyle over Kendrick Lamar’s “squabble up.” Before getting started, Hart gave Kendrick his flowers and warned everybody to “buckle up.” That was all the invitation the crowd needed.
For nearly two minutes, Hart played the part of a hard-edged rapper with exaggerated confidence, turning the tough-guy image into one long comedy routine. Every gesture, facial expression, and punchline seemed designed to push the joke a little further. The crowd clearly understood the assignment, responding with laughter as Chocolate Droppa strutted through his moment.
But Hart saved something more personal for the end, he closed the performance with a shout-out to his late mother, Nancy Annie Lee, who died in 2007. The moment added some heart to what had otherwise been pure comedy.
Hart may never need to release a serious rap album, but his BET Awards appearance proved something important, give him a microphone, a stage, and a willing audience, and he knows exactly what to do with all three.
