The opener, “Ghosts,” from City & Sound was abrupt. The band wrote the song in an hour after the first riff struck them in the basement. The band then worked on the track and came up with melody ideas. The next day I wrote the melody to the chorus. The song comes to life organically, as the result of a rapid creative process where the main musical idea comes before the words.
“Ghosts” is described by the band as an upbeat anthem, but it has a deeper meaning. Songs about needing attention and being pissed off when people ignore you, don’t pay attention, or switch off. The song is about expression, about showing that you can always be heard instead of letting frustration win.
That theme inspired the video to show off the band’s favourite album covers and creative ways to present a person’s “voice.” It fits the song’s theme. “Ghosts” challenges the idea that if you’re ignored, your words lose value. Cities & Sound turns silence into a positive statement of expression, individuality, and persistence. Your words matter, and your voice matters, it started out as a spur-of-the-moment riff but became more intentional.
