If there was one fashion trend that ruled 2020, it was the return of the statement boot. From virtual meetings to socially distanced outings, the season’s hottest styles proved comfort and fashion could finally coexist.
For months now I’ve been living in sneakers and slippers, and I’ve noticed how practical designs are becoming the norm. Flat knee-high boots made a comeback, while chunky combat boots added an edgy touch to everyday looks. Minimalists went for sleek square-toe ankle boots, and rubber styles became the staple for unpredictable weather.
Over-the-knee boots made a surprising return, once again finding their place in fall wardrobes.
This season is all about style but not at the expense of comfort. It was a question of finding the right balance between the two.
The High Lows
The knee-high boot is back this season, but in a more practical form this time. Say so long (for now) to the ones with stiletto heels and slip into an elegantly simple pair that’s comfortable and way more walkable thanks to nearly flat block heels.

Chunky Combats
The lace-up boot is a perennial favorite, but this fall, the combat boot is getting a major lift. Lug soles and chunky heels have replaced the original flat silhouettes. Perhaps it’s a riff on the hiking boots that were trending the past few winter seasons. But in any case, we certainly can’t complain about the practicality and instant edge these stomp-ready boots are giving us this fall and for the winter ahead.
