Amazon will let customers try on clothes before they buy

The one glaring problem with buying clothes online has always been that you can’t try something on before you order it. A picture can show the design, a size chart can provide measurements, and customer reviews can provide clues, but none of these can fully replace standing in front of a mirror in the garment.

That’s a problem Amazon has been trying to solve with Prime Wardrobe, a service that allows eligible Prime members to get fashion items delivered to their homes, try them on, and only pay for what they keep. The service, which Amazon launched in 2018, offers free shipping and no upfront cost on qualifying clothing, shoes, bags, and accessories.

This was an appealing idea, as buying clothes at home is normally a more enjoyable experience than a rushed trip to a store. Customers can see how an item works with clothes they already have and how the fit looks in familiar surroundings and make a decision without the pressure of a salesperson.

Later, Amazon built on the concept with Personal Shopper by Prime Wardrobe, which offered styling recommendations and allowed customers to try on selections prior to delivery. The service was about convenience, try at home and only pay for what you choose to keep.

But there is an important historical caveat. Amazon killed off its Prime Try Before You Buy program in January 2025. The program was not scalable, the company said, and it has since referred customers to other digital shopping tools, such as virtual try-on and size recommendations. The successful online fashion business is the one that can reduce the uncertainty of fit, comfort, and look. “That drive to bring the fitting-room experience to the home was a big part of that evolution.”
