Better Call Saul fans got the confirmation they were craving in June 2017 that the critically-acclaimed Breaking Bad prequel would return for a fourth season. The official announcement came on June 27, 2017, when AMC confirmed the show’s renewal for another season. Season four was supposed to return in 2018.

The renewal came at a critical point in the series’ life. Better Call Saul had proven itself to be more than just a companion show to Breaking Bad. The series was always about Jimmy McGill, the man who would become Saul Goodman, but its story had grown to include characters like Mike Ehrmantraut, Kim Wexler, Nacho Varga, and Gus Fring.

Jimmy was played by Bob Odenkirk, while Mike was played by Jonathan Banks. Michael McKean, Rhea Seehorn, Michael Mando, and Giancarlo Esposito were also important parts of the show’s increasingly complex world.

At the end of the third season, the show left viewers with many questions. Jimmy’s relationship with his brother Chuck had been tragic, and the season finale ended with Chuck’s house on fire. That cliffhanger immediately posed questions about what would come next.

But Better Call Saul had always been more about building characters than it was about simple suspense. The joy of the show was in witnessing how small decisions led to big gains.

One of the central long-running storylines on television was Jimmy’s transformation into Saul Goodman. The audience knew where the character was ultimately headed thanks to Breaking Bad, but the prequel’s difficulty was explaining how he got there.

Season four was, therefore, another stage in the evolution of Jimmy McGill. The question was not merely whether he would be Saul Goodman. Viewers wanted to know what emotional, professional, and personal events would push him further toward that identity.

The renewal also validated the show’s critical standing. By the end of its third season, Better Call Saul had racked up several award nominations and a reputation for detailed writing, patient storytelling, and strong performances.

Another draw was its connection to Breaking Bad. Fans may have recognized familiar names, places, and characters, but the prequel still worked as its own drama.

That balance was one of the show’s strengths. It allowed new viewers, who had never seen Breaking Bad, to understand Jimmy’s story, and longtime fans to appreciate the significance of characters and events that would become important later on.

The announcement of season four therefore promised more than just another batch of episodes. It was a sign that AMC was still committed to one of its most closely watched dramas.

Looking back, the renewal was part of a much larger journey. Season four finally premiered in 2018 and picked up the slow march toward the world viewers knew from Breaking Bad. But for fans in 2017, the more immediate concern was simpler, what would happen next to Jimmy, Kim, Mike, and the increasingly dangerous characters around them? The answer will have to wait until next year.
