One of the biggest controversies to emerge after the 2020 election was voter turnout.

Eva Longoria praised Latina voters for their role in the election during a TV interview, but many viewers felt she had downplayed the critical support of Black women during the campaign.

There was a quick response. People pointed to the crucial part that Black women played in key battleground states that helped determine the outcome of the election, social media exploded with criticism.

What was clear from the online reaction was that the incident was no normal celebrity kerfuffle. It became a bigger conversation about recognition, about representation, about giving credit where credit is due.

Longoria later apologized, saying she would continue to support Black women and that she had taken her comments out of context. But the apology didn’t end the debate. It showed how words can matter a lot in historic moments.

Years from now we’ll look back on the 2020 Election and remember that over 90% of Black women showed up, showed out and saved the country in a truly iconic outpouring of support that won key states and ultimately the White House for Joe & Kamala.

“Of course, you saw in Georgia what Black women have done but Latina women were the real heroines here, beating men in turnout in every state and voting for Biden-Harris at an average rate of 3:1,” she claimed.
