Music history is full of artists who announced an ending only to discover that the creative pull of music was not quite finished. Retirement can mean many things: stepping away from touring, leaving a group, announcing a farewell, or simply taking an extended break. In several memorable cases, the supposed final chapter eventually became another beginning.

1. Jay-Z — Jay-Z famously announced his retirement around the release of The Black Album in 2003, only to return with Kingdom Come in 2006. His comeback became a major moment in hip-hop.

2. Tina Turner—After stepping away from regular touring, Turner returned to the stage in a major way, including her 2008–09 50th Anniversary Tour. Her final concert took place in 2009.

3. Ozzy Osbourne — Osbourne’s 1992 “No More Tours” period was presented as a farewell, but the official record shows another tour under the very fitting title “Retirement Sucks” in 1995–96.

4. LCD Soundsystem—The group staged a celebrated farewell show at Madison Square Garden in 2011, then announced a full reformation in 2016 with new music and touring plans.

5. The Police—After years apart, the band reunited for a major world tour in 2007–08, returning to the stage decades after their earlier touring period.

6. The Eagles—The band’s famous “Hell Freezes Over “Reunion” brought the group back together in the 1990s after their earlier breakup.

7. Cher — Cher’s career has included multiple farewell periods, followed by new performances and renewed recording and touring activity.

8. The Pixies — After breaking up in the early 1990s, the alternative-rock group reunited in 2004 and returned to touring.

9. My Bloody Valentine—The influential group returned to live performance after a long period away and eventually released new music again.

10. Guns N’ Roses—Although the band’s history is more complicated than a simple retirement, its later reunions demonstrate how musical careers can reform after periods of separation.

The pattern is fascinating because retirement in music is rarely as straightforward as it seems. For some artists, the stage is a workplace; for others, it is a creative identity. Walking away can provide rest, perspective, or freedom, but returning can also reopen a connection with audiences.

That is why music history has so many comebacks. A farewell may be sincere when it is announced, but artists—and audiences—sometimes discover that the story still has another chapter.
