In the summer of 2017, Giancarlo Stanton was one of the biggest names on the baseball trade market. The Miami Marlins slugger had established himself as one of baseball’s most dangerous power hitters, and by July 24 he had already reached 30 home runs. With the Marlins facing questions about their future, speculation naturally centred on which clubs could realistically make a deal for a player of Stanton’s size, production, contract, and star power. Sports Illustrated identified seven teams that made sense as possible destinations at the time: the Atlanta Braves, Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies, St. Louis Cardinals, and San Francisco Giants.

Each potential destination presented a different argument. The Dodgers and Yankees had the financial resources and organizational depth to construct a major trade, although both already possessed considerable offensive talent. Boston could have viewed Stanton as another major piece for a competitive lineup, while Philadelphia represented a club capable of looking beyond the immediate moment and building around a major offensive acquisition. The Braves and Cardinals also had reasons to consider the possibility, while San Francisco represented another established organization with the resources to explore a significant move.

The most compelling part of trade speculation is that other factors, not just talent, usually determine whether a deal happens. Contract obligations, prospects, positional needs, ownership spending, and the player’s own preferences can all reshape the conversation. In Stanton’s case, that proved particularly important. Later in 2017, he approved a trade to the Yankees, Dodgers, Cubs, or Astros and ultimately landed in New York.

Looking back, the Stanton trade discussion illustrates why baseball’s trade season can be so fascinating. A superstar may seem to fit numerous teams on paper, but turning speculation into a completed transaction requires many factors to align at the right moment.
