GUS ORMO

Gus Ormo’s latest release, “Claroscuro (AGAPE),” puts the instruments in front, so the expression comes through the musical details rather than through a vocal performance. The arrangement is filled with the soft, gentle presence of the saxophone and the structure of the piano and chord progression. Strings provide another layer, adding further depth to an instrumental setting made up of several well-defined parts.

Those melodic elements are underpinned with drums, bass, shakers, and percussion to create movement. The rhythm provides the track a base without losing the more delicate parts of the sax and piano. Acoustic guitar and lead guitar further define the instrumental sound, adding additional textures to the arrangement.

“Claroscuro (AGAPE)” doesn’t feature any vocal performances on the front of the track, allowing each instrument to participate in the overall expression. In this piece, Gus Ormo plays alongside saxophone, piano, strings, rhythm instruments, acoustic guitar, and lead guitar, with the arrangement as the main voice. The outcome is an instrumental work that depends on musical interaction, on movement, and on the changing presence of its individual parts.
